The Galley Master

“I have complained that I am not free,

but I have listened to

and obeyed the mallet of the galley master

-its’ sound almost drowns

the knowledge of my loss.

It is impossible to stifle the pain,

impossible to lock myself away

from the memory of another choice,

another destiny.

No fiction can destroy the ache of the fall.

Under a debris of lies,

behind the rotting mask of fear,

who has killed the original creature

that might have been man?”
